Freelance writer Ajeet Mahale discusses how he saves money on transport, the benefits of research before a big purchase, and how you can save by investing in quality clothes.

Ajeet Mahale, a freelance writer, says saving money is very important because his monthly income isn’t fixed. So, he says, a bit of planning is necessary, particularly before making large purchases. Here are his money saving secrets:

What are your money-saving tricks?
I save a lot of money by keeping rickshaw travel to the bare minimum. I don’t think most of us realise how much we spend on commuting every month. I keep that in mind and save as much as possible on travel by planning my commute. I’m very aware of my transportation options and take busses or trains to reach my destination. I often leave early than catch a rickshaw.

I also research heavily before making a big purchase. Recently, I found a great deal on a refurbished Mac laptop in the UK. My aunt paid for it and brought it to India when she was visiting. It cost much less than a new one and though it is second-hand, it works as good as new.

What was the last great deal you got?
I recently got a voucher for Rs200 from Haiko (in Mumbai) after shopping for Rs1,200. They had an anniversary offer going on. That was pretty good.

Is there a product or service you don’t mind paying a premium for?
Clothes, especially daily wear such as footwear, socks and belts (I hate it when the buckle comes off). I feel that there is no point scrimping on good quality. They might be more expensive, but they last longer so you don’t have to keep shopping every six months or so.
