Budget phones with 8-megapixel cameras

If you want a phone for its camera capabilities, you don’t need an expensive handset with blown out specifications. Here's our pick of smartphones under Rs10,000 with 8-megapixel cameras.

Let’s say you’re looking to get something specific out of your smartphone; there’s no reason to pay heavily for a whole bevy of features that you don’t want and may never use. If, for example, you’re looking for a phone just so that you can take good photos with it, you don’t have to pay upwards of Rs40,000.

This feature article focuses on budget smartphones that offer 8-megapixel cameras. There are several out there that will fit your budget if you like capturing photography with your cell phone camera. Nothing too professional; just quick, good quality pictures. And with the power of the operating system that a smartphone affords over a standard point-and-shoot, you can even beautify your shots with several apps.

Micromax Canvas Doodle (A111)


Camera: 8-megapixel
Extra features: Autofocus with dual LED flash
Price: Rs8,800
Camera features: Besides autofocus, the phone has a night mode for low light photos and 4x zoom. The 2-megapixel front camera is an interesting addition.
Other features: With a large 5.3-inch capacitive screen, the Canvas Doodle gives you a good platform to view your shots. But being a budget phone, the screen resolution is limited to 480×854 pixels. RAM is less at just 512MB, and of the 4GB internal ROM, just 1.2 is available. However, memory expansion is possible up to 32GB. The phone has a 1.2GHz, quad-core processor.

Intex Aqua N8


Camera: 8-megapixel
Extra features: Autofocus, flash
Price: Rs9,000 (MRP); available for Rs8,000
Camera features: In addition to the 8-megapixel camera with AF and flash at the rear, the Aqua N8 has a 2-megapixel front-facing snapper which also comes with autofocus.
Other features: Only 512MB of RAM here, but you get a 1.3GHz, quad core processor and Jelly Bean. The dual-SIM gadget has a 4.5-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 854x480p. Internal storage space is less but you can expand memory with a microSD card. The battery – at 1,750mAh – is also small.

Xolo Q700S


Camera: 8-megapixel
Extra features: AF, dual LED flash
Price: Rs9,000 (MRP); available for Rs7,500
Camera features: The rear camera incorporates a BSI sensor for clarity and can record video at 1080p. Unfortunately, the front camera is of VGA resolution only.
Other features: The great thing about the phone is that it has 1GB of RAM and a 4GB internal ROM (however usable space will be less) which is expandable by up to 32GB. The battery is not very large though – 1,800mAh – but then again the screen is 4.5 inches across. Speed comes from the 1.3GHz, quad-core CPU and the 416MHz Mali GPU.

Lava Iris 458q


Camera: 8-megapixel
Extra features: Autofocus with LED flash
Price: Rs9,000 (MRP); available for Rs8,100
Camera features: Besides the AF and LED flash, the Iris 458q offers face detection and a panorama mode. The front camera, however, is just 0.3-megapixel.
Other features: Its 4.5-inch, 480x854p display is powered by a 2,000mAh battery, but RAM is limited to 512MB. This phone also has a 4GB ROM which is expandable. It runs on Android Jelly Bean and a 1.2GHz, quad-core processor.

Karbonn A29


Camera: 8-megapixel
Extra features: AF, LED flash
Price: Rs6,293 (online)
Camera features: A 2-megapixel front camera trumps many budget models with VGA camera facing the user.
Other features: The A29 has an IPS screen 4.7 inches across with a resolution of 540x960p and it has gesture support. The 512MB of RAM may be less, but the 4GB internal storage (2.5GB usable) is expandable by up to 32GB. The dual-SIM phone comes with a 1.2GHz, dual-core CPU and a 2,000mAh battery.

13-megapixel camera for the price of 8-megapixel

Intex Aqua i5 HD


The Intex Aqua i5 HD gives you a 13-megapixel camera but still manages to squeeze into our tight budget. You can consider the phone if you want even more photography power (larger images).
Camera: 13-megapixel
Extra features: Autofocus, flash
Price: Rs10,000
Camera features: The 13-megapixel rear camera also has exciting features such as voice capture, panorama, HDR and continuous shot modes. A colossal 5-megapixel front camera should allow you to take clear selfies.
Other features: The i5 HD has a 5-inch screen with a resolution of 720x1280p, 1GB of RAM and a 1.3Ghz, quad-core processor. The 2,000mAh battery should be powerful enough to handle the large screen. However, in-built memory is small, although you can easily expand by as much as 32GB.

Also consider

These smartphones are just beyond the Rs10,000 budget tag we’ve set. But you should check them out if you can allot a little more cash to your purchase. They have a more premium feel and are from more highly rated manufacturers.

LG Optimus L7 II Dual


Camera: 8-megapixel
Extra features: Autofocus with LED flash
Price: Rs14,500 (MRP); available for Rs12,500
Camera features: The LG Optimus L7 II Dual isn’t a cheap-looking phone by any standards. The camera affords you autofocus capabilities (as you would expect), but it also has an LED flash to make your images brighter. There is 4x digital zoom and the camera can be used in panaroma and continuous shoot modes. There is also cheese shutter function – which allows you to take photos by saying out certain words – and you can control the ISO from 100 to 400.
Other features: The phone doesn’t have that much RAM – you’ll have to make do with 768MB – but there is a 1GHz, dual-core processor. Your shots will display on a 4.3-inch, true IPS display; however, screen resolution is just of the WVGA type (i.e. 800x480p). The L7 II Dual has 4GB of internal memory to store your photos, but only about 1.8GB is available. However, you can expand memory by up to 32GB using an external card. LG claims the 2,460mAh, Li-ion battery will last over 850 hours on standby or for 12.5 hours of talk time.

Lenovo S720


Camera: 8-megapixel
Extra features: AF with LED flash
Price: Rs10,500
Camera features: Besides geo-tagging (a feature that many smartphones include for their photos), the S720’s camera also has face detection and allows you to tap the screen to focus on a point.
Other features: The phone features a dual-core Cortex A9 CPU, but in addition, it also has a graphics chip, the PowerVR SGX531. The 4.5-inch screen offers a resolution of 540x960p and there is a 1-megapixel front camera as well. RAM is short here too (512MB) and although there isn’t information on how much of the 4GB internal memory is user-accessible, you can expand up to 32GB.
