Since Republic Day 2015 falls on a Monday, the extended weekend is perfect for a short trip with family or friends. If you’re wondering about your holiday options, we bring you a list of pocket-friendly destinations across India. Check it out, but remember to book accommodation and travel as early as you can to get the best possible prices.

This beautiful hill station, which was the summer capital of British India, is a popular tourist destination, but with its many home-stays and affordable hotels, it makes for a great budget destination. Home-stays can range between Rs1,500 and Rs3,000 per night, while a room in a hotel will you cost you between Rs2,000 and Rs5,000. Just because it will be quite cold right now, it doesn’t mean that it is a bad time to visit Shimla. Apart from beautiful snowcapped mountains, you can also look forward to adventure sports.

This union territory is perfect if you’re looking for a quiet, lazy weekend break. Though most of the hotels and resorts are located on the beach-front, the beaches are nothing to write home about. However, with a relaxed pace of life and dirt-cheap food and drink, it makes for a great weekend break from the city. Accommodation can range from Rs1,500 to Rs5,000 per night and you can also look on social media websites, as well as ask your friends, for people who have villas and bungalows, which they might be willing to rent out.

Kollam, famed for its backwaters, is often considered to be an expensive destination. However, most people do not take into account the affordable home-stays or the motels operated by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. You can get rooms for as cheap as Rs1,000 per night. Two- and three-star hotels will cost you between Rs2,000 and Rs5,000. Not opting for an overnight houseboat stay is the best way to save money in Kollam. They can be astronomically expensive, especially during extended weekends. Instead, choose a half-day boat trip, which will take you around the scenic backwaters.

Jim Corbett National Park
One of India’s best national parks, Jim Corbett is only open between November and June and so, you should make the most of the extended Republic Day break. The park offers overnight stays at one of its many forest rest houses, the prices for which range from Rs1,250 to Rs2,500. You can even book a dormitory (with 24 berths) at Rs200 per person.

Damdama Lake
Located around 60km from Delhi, Damdama Lake is a great location for adventure sports enthusiasts. The lake offers sports such as para sailing, kayaking and rock climbing, as well as boat rides. Resorts around the lake offer weekend packages that are priced between Rs2,000 and Rs3,000. You can also opt to stay in Gurgaon, where you can find budget hotels that offer rooms for Rs1,000-Rs3,000 per night and travel to Damdama lake, which is located around 24km away from Gurgaon.
