Membership benefits of travel websites
The next time you’re booking a flight, don’t just sign in as a guest. Registering as a member of the airline/travel agent you’re booking with is the easy route to a discount.
Booking flights for the family holiday is a fun exercise. You try to find the best deal or calculate whether you should wait a few days or if the best fares are already on offer. But in trying to save a few rupees, we often forget the easier ways to saving. When it comes to booking flights or hotels on travel websites, it’s often worth checking if there’s a membership bonus. They may not be available all year round, but when they are, the 10% discount you could get on the base fare of all your tickets will save you a tidy sum. Here are a few examples of what’s on offer as on November 14, 2013:
Until this end of this month, Yatra’s will give you Rs500 off on your first domestic flight booking if you sign up for its Quick Book option. Aside from this discount, signing up will make booking tickets a smoother process. All your forms will, for example, be pre-filled and it becomes easier to manage bookings and cancellations.
Indigo has had this discount on for a few months now. If you sign up as a member (only on its official website), you’ll receive a discount of 10% on the base fare of any flight (Indigo does some international routes too!). It’s a discount on only the base fare, so the savings won’t be big, but it’s still worth the effort.
Via offers good discounts and very competitive booking charges. It also has a good reward points system for its members (all you need to do is sign up). Book any flight ticket and you earn 100 reward points, book a flight + hotel and you get 200 points, and book a holiday and get 200 points for every Rs5,000 you spend. The points can then be redeemed on the website for a discount on tickets/holiday arrangements.
The Sabeer Bhatia-led travel agent is currently offering the same kind of discount as Indigo. If you book any flight or hotel as a member, you are entitled to 10% off on the base fare of any domestic flight. This does not apply only to the first time you book after you sign up. Currently, no end date has been announced for this offer.
