India car rental guide

Instead of booking a cab to travel through the city, hire one from a car rental services. At lower prices, you'll be given the option of chauffeur- and self-driven cars.

Car rental services are immensely popular in the West, but are fairly unpopular here. We’ve looked at what’s on offer in the organised sector to find that they can be used to great benefit. They’re cheaper over long distances within the city and reasonable for weekend getaways too, particularly if you’ll need a car in the city you’re travelling to. Both chauffeur- and self-driven cars are available. Find out which suits you best.

Chauffeur-driven cars
If you don’t want the hassle of negotiating tricky roads and traffic conditions, this option is for you. Once you pay the asking price, you don’t have to shell out money for anything other than parking and toll charges. Fuel and driver charges are included in the rent amount. As it involves a driver provided by the company, no security deposit is needed either. Typically, these services are offered for a minimum booking of four hours. If you need a car for this long, keep in mind that these services start at Rs8.5/km while cab services will charge you Rs20/km (in Mumbai).
