Money Saver India
How about renting your wedding dress?

How about renting your wedding dress?

If you think buying a designer gown or jewellery for your wedding is a wasteful expense, here are places that allow you to rent them at a fraction of the cost.

The concept of renting wedding dresses and jewellery has been around for a long time in the West. So much so that even a few websites selling Indian clothes, such as Run the Runway, Luxemi and borrowitbindaas, have taken off. While renting has always been possible here, particularly in big cities (Jawahar Dresswalla and Company in Mumbai, for example), it has never been on a large scale. Well, it seems like things are slowly changing. We’ve found a few online stores that allow you to rent both clothes and jewellery, against a security deposit of course, if you think it’s impractical to be spending a lot of money on something you’ll only wear once.

Secret Wardrobe
Choose from dozens of Indian and Western designer outfits from Satyapaul, Abraham & Thakore, Sabyasachi, Maheka Mirpuri, Anita Dongre, Ranna Gill, Malini Ramani, Sabbah Sharma, Rahul Mishra and Masaba Gupta, among others. You can try the outfit before you rent. They guarantee a designer label and authentic goods. They claim that the garments are dry-cleaned and ironed before and after each rental.
What: Sarees, salwar suits, shervanis, lehenga cholis, party gowns, dresses, wedding gowns and jewellery.
How it works: Go to the website to select the garments or accessories you want to rent. If it’s available on the day you want it, pay for it online. Once the website receives a payment, you can collect it at their boutique. If you can’t go to the boutique, you can avail of their pick-up and drop service for Rs500.
Price: If an outfit is Rs30,000, the rent will be Rs5,750. You also pay a deposit which is returned after you hand over the rented goods.
Time period: Standard rental period is for two nights. They deliver before 6pm a night before your rental date and collected before 4pm the day after the rental date. If you wish to rent an outfit for a longer period, there is an extra charge of Rs500 per day.
Trial: If you wish to try the outfit before, fix an appointment with Secret Wardrobe (based in Santacruz, Mumbai). For a home trial (not available for accessories and sarees), they charge Rs300 and extra Rs100 each for additional garment.
